Things went disastrously wrong. It was a real mess. We tried to {compensate|handle the situation, but it was like trying to stop a flood with a spoon. We're still picking up the shards and feeling the blow of this unmitigated catastrophe.

This crisis has spiraled out of control. It's a total disaster. We've tried just about read more everything to fix it, but nothing seems to be effective. At this point, it feels like we're hopelessly stuck. Frankly, I don't know what else to do. This is a train wreck of epic proportions.
Dude, This Is Pathetic Yet Somehow Entertaining
Sometimes you find yourself face-to-face with situations so terrible that you can't help but laugh. It's like your brain tries to process the sheer magnitude of destruction and just throws its hands up, opting for a weak, desperate giggle as a coping mechanism.
But then, you remember that it's not really hilarious. It's just plain horrifyingly awful. And the laughter you felt morphs into a groan.
After all is said and done, you are left with a sense of utter perplexity. You wonder about the purpose of it all. Was this intended to be funny?
Or were we just all part of a grand, cosmic prank?

The earthquake struck with devastating force, destroying entire villages in its wake. Buildings shattered like sandcastles, and the screams that erupted was deafening. Thousands were trapped beneath rubble, their fate precarious. The severity of the disaster was unprecedented, forcing survivors to confront a future forever changed.

Worst Day Ever
It all started with a case of bedhead hair. I couldn't do it to look presentable. As I was dashing out the door, I trippedon and badly all over my new shoes. To make matters worse, I was totally behind schedule for a very important appointment.
I with no time to spare. My {boss|friend|was absolutely furious. I tried to explain, but it was no use.
The rest of the day was an absolute nightmare. Everything. I stay awake.
By the time I got home, I was physically and emotionally wiped out. This day, this horrific day will be forever remembered as an epic fail.

It all started out horribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then everything went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to run away and hide.
